After publishing an essay in an issue of Criterion, what more can be done with the final publicized piece? Authors have a few options to pursue after their work appears in Criterion:
- Social Media: Authors can share their finished essays on social media sites, such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. If you are advertising for your piece, it is often extremely beneficial to make a professional, writing-focused account across social media platforms so that professional work can all be collected in one place, be easily shared, and act as a display of an author’s past achievements
- Submit to Present Elsewhere: Authors can also submit their pieces to other literary-based contests, symposiums, and magazine calls for submissions. Take care to read the rules and fine print of each contest, symposium, or magazine to see if they accept written work that has already been published elsewhere. Resubmitting the essay for awards and consideration can widen the impact and exposure of the piece
- Portfolio: Authors can add their published essays to their professional portfolios. Many job applications, internships, and programs will ask for professional writing samples of past work. If authors take care now to compile their works, it will be much easier to share their essays and writing samples with future employers and interested parties
Don’t be afraid to promote, repurpose, and update the essay to fit future needs. Doing so will help refine the piece while increasing its exposure and influence in the literary world at large.
